PDRN has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in Korean professional skincare. If clients are asking about it, or you are deciding whether to add PDRN products to your treatment menu, here is a plain-language overview.
What does PDRN stand for?
PDRN is short for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is made of DNA fragments, most commonly sourced from salmon, that are purified for use in skincare and aesthetics. You may also see related terms on labels, such as “sodium DNA”, and some brands now offer plant-derived alternatives.
Why is it popular in Korean skincare?
In Korea, PDRN is well known from clinic treatments, and cosmetic brands have brought the ingredient into creams, serums and ampoules for salon and home use. In topical skincare it is generally positioned as a skin-conditioning ingredient, included in formulas aimed at hydration, a smoother-looking complexion and supporting the skin after professional treatments.
It is important to keep expectations realistic. Topical cosmetics work on the surface of the skin and are not the same as injectable or medical PDRN treatments, which are carried out by licensed medical professionals. When you talk to clients, describe what the product does as a cosmetic and follow the brand’s own claims.
Using PDRN products in the treatment room
- Serums and ampoules are typically applied after cleansing and exfoliation, when the skin is prepared to receive actives, and before a mask or massage step.
- Creams work well to finish a facial and as a take-home product, so clients can continue the routine between appointments.
- Pairing: PDRN formulas are often combined with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or with peptides. Check each product’s full ingredient list before layering.
Good practice
- Because many PDRN ingredients are derived from salmon, ask clients about fish or seafood allergies and check the ingredient list.
- Patch test new products, especially on sensitive or reactive skin.
- Follow the manufacturer’s directions for use and frequency.
